We move on out ourselves, heading to the Metro Home Show at the Metro Convention Centre, where we wade through displays of hot tubs, carpet cleaners, reclining massage chairs and remodelled kitchens. We are stopped in our tracks by wild things – wild things handmade in leather in India – at Decor Spectrum Inc., purveyors of $99.99 stools in faux zebra, lion, camel and elephant motifs.
They specialize in figurines, decorative items and wall hangings. The $39.99 leather moose heads are big sellers, as are coffee tables with round glass tops held up by leather elephants, giraffes, horses or camels. They cost $259.99 and are great for patios because they are waterproof and can be spruced up with shoe polish and a brush.
Wood and leather deer bookends are $39.99 and bookends are also available in full leather for $49.99 in hippo, elephant and horse versions. Multiples of these creatures in one room would be too Ramar of the Jungle but used judiciously, they could be Ralph Lauren does Out of Africa. Decor Spectrum also does custom orders. They made a life-sized elephant for a South African couple for $4,000 and shipped it there. Shipping and handling were extra. Their website is www.decorspectrum.com.
